This painting by Jeon Gi (1825-1854) depicts a small house and pine trees beyond the bridge over the creek. The distant landscape conveys a sense of solitude, stillness and understated simplicity.
Jeon Gi, a painter and literati artist, is renowned for his paintings of natural landscapes. He was greatly influenced by Kim Jeong-hi — pen name Chusa — an eminent calligrapher and painter of the late Joseon era.
The poem written in the top right comes from "Lofty Scholars in a Pine Valleys," a painting by Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), a renowned calligrapher and painter of the Ming dynasty in China.
